Ecommerce platforms ship with dozens of features you could add. Most stores need a handful of them done well, not all of them done half-heartedly. Here's what actually earns its place.
Fast, accurate shipping calculation
Surprise shipping costs at checkout are one of the most common reasons Australian shoppers abandon a cart. Show real shipping costs, by weight or postcode, as early as possible — not just at the final step.
Clear stock status
"In stock", "low stock" or "back-ordered" set expectations honestly. Letting someone order something that's actually unavailable creates a support problem you didn't need.
Guest checkout
Forcing an account creation before purchase is a genuine conversion killer. Offer guest checkout as the default, with an account as an optional convenience afterwards, not a gate.
Multiple, locally relevant payment options
Card payments plus a buy-now-pay-later option (where relevant to your product range) covers most Australian shopping habits. More options generally help; the wrong ones just add checkout complexity.
Genuine product photography, not stock images
Real photos of the actual product, from more than one angle, consistently outperform stock imagery on conversion — particularly for anything where texture, scale or colour accuracy matters.
Reviews, where you can get real ones
Genuine customer reviews are one of the strongest trust signals a product page can have. Fake or incentivised reviews are a legal and reputational risk in Australia — not worth it.
Features that sound impressive but rarely move the needle: 360-degree product spins for simple products, live chat bots with no one actually behind them, and gamified discount pop-ups. They add build cost without a clear return for most stores.
The feature that matters most: speed
None of the above helps if the page takes four seconds to load. Image optimisation, clean code and decent hosting matter more to conversion than most individual features on this list. See our ecommerce development page for how we approach the build itself.
